SPOILER ALERT!

Review: Children of the Plague [Kindle Edition]

Children of the Plague - Gregory Carrico

Interesting premise - I'd like to see a continuation.

This novel is written to go along with a short story, Killing Tiffany Hudson. In the short story, you see a battle occurring between Monsters and people who are not exactly human either. The ending of the short story leaves you to feel as if the plague/invasion is over with... however, the novel, Children of the Plague provides more information before and after the short story, and also the timeline of the short story from a different point of view.

Two teenagers, Lanni & Alex, are affected by this plague that is turning people around them into monsters. Alex himself is one of those monsters, but he holds onto his humanity enough to help save and protect an enclave of humans. Lanni was affected by the plague herself, but in a different way - the attacks of most of the monsters don't affect her, and many of them can't even see her - she's a blank spot in their vision and power.

The novel starts with Lanni & Alex running for their lives after the plague starts. It forwards to some time in the future, though it doesn't specify exactly how long everyone has been living with these changes. The few humans left are trying to survive. The monsters are encroaching on their territory, but an every stronger monster will be showing up soon. And everyone must work together to fight.

Without giving away anything from the end of the book, I just want to say that there was an opening left for a sequel. Though the short story made it appear that the invasion was over with, the novel leaves you with unanswered questions and the promise of danger in the future.
