Kahayatle (Apocalypsis Book 1) - Reading progress update: I've read 44%.
And... 44% is the max that I will read on Kahayatle (Apocalypsis Book 1). This is the first novel is the six book dystopian collection called Shattered Worlds, and this was the only book that didn't sound so great when I read the synopsis listed for each one. I was correct in my initial reaction... this book is just blah.
NOTE: Spoilers below. Though can they really be considered spoilers when you figure all of this out within the first 10% of the book?
The story starts out with an interesting premise, though one that I've seen before. All of the adults--apparently everyone age 20 and older--dies of a mysterious illness that is never described. In this case, however, apparently the illness didn't happen to everyone at once, since the main character's father had at least a six month warning to try to get her prepared. I say TRY because Bryn didn't bother to listen to her father... because if she did, we wouldn't have the attempt at soul-crushing regret the author adds in throughout the course of the book. We don't know what caused the illness, and apparently no one figured that out in the lag time between when the first person got sick and the last adult died.
Now left alone, all of the children in the world must fend for themselves. So what happens? Many of them apparently turn cannibal. This isn't really a spoiler since it's announced early in the book. From there, the main character Bryn and her plucky sidekick must travel 250 miles on bikes to safety, while avoiding cannibals. And boredom.
Oh wait... the boredom was mine.
Most of the novel--at least through the first 44%--is predictable. The main character is abrasive and egotistical. Her plucky sidekick is a younger boy (who is gay... it normally wouldn't make a difference, but they tell you that he's gay over and over and over and over again until you want to just slap a rainbow on him and yell I GET IT!) Peter, the sidekick, also announces early on that Bryn should find a guy her own age to cuddle with. Yes, this is mentioned multiple times as well. Surprise, surprise... in the next chapter, a guy her age magically shows up! Yay!
The action is what you would expect. Peter mentions cannibals. Cannibals show up the next day. They have to run away from cannibals. More cannibals find them on the way. They have to continue running away from cannibals. See a pattern here?
I skimmed through the rest of the book and it is pretty much all of the same. Plus, the author leaves the book at a cliffhanger (she mentions that as a postscript to the book, telling people to buy her next book to find out what happened... really classy) so if you like your books to have endings, this isn't the one for you.
The collection, Shattered Worlds, is available on amazon for $0.99. It might be worth it for you, since I'm hoping that the other five stories are at least interesting. And who knows... you might enjoy reading Kahayatle. You can buy Kahayatle separately, of course, but it alone costs the same as the collection so you might as well get six books for the price of one!
