Review: Cipher (The Shadow Ravens Book 1)

Cipher (The Shadow Ravens Book 1) - Aileen Erin

Cipher, Book 1 of the Shadow Ravens, is a fast-paced thrill of an adventure, trapped in book form. Set in a future time, people who prove their worth or intelligence have their DNA genetically modified to enhance speed, technological skill, intelligence, and they are marked with a specific helix to show their abilities. There is also one class of people who are marked at birth - those with unstable DNA - and are marked with a Red Helix before being killed. Lady Eva and her Shadow Ravens fight to rescue these babies, stabilize their DNA, and allow them to live as normally as they can.

Cipher was rescued by the Shadow Ravens as a baby and returned to her parents. Though her parents tried to hide her, her ability to harness electricity ultimately leads to their death and Cipher's flight into the void. Twelve years later, Cipher is a young women still running for her survival. Trying to find the secret behind the Red Helix, Cipher finds herself trapped with her past as her uncle attempts to capture her while a childhood friend searches to protect her. Unable to run any further, Cipher must learn if she can control her powers and learn the trust the people who love her, or everything may be lost.

This is an exciting and well written story, drawing you in until you don't want to put the book down. The world of the Seligo and Shadow Ravens is well developed, interesting, and brilliantly put together. The series will continue by introducing other characters with the final novel showcasing all of the main characters together.  The only downside to this book is that I have to wait a year for the next book!
