Review: The Paper Magician

The Paper Magician - Charlie N. Holmberg

Welcome to a world where magic is created by bonding to man-made materials, such as paper, plastic, rubber, and blacksmith worked-metals. Ceony Twill, a new graduate of The Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, always wanted to be a Smelter, working with magical bullets and bespelled gems. To her dismay, Ceony is selected to be a Folder, a magician bonded to Paper.

Apprenticed to a magician she suspects of being at least slightly insane, Ceony finds herself surrounded by magical snowflakes, paper illusions, a paper skeleton butler, and a house full of secrets. When a practitioner of forbidden magic steals her teacher Emery Thane's heart, Ceony must use her new-found skills to save him, leading her on an adventure born of paper and blood.

I really enjoyed this book. While the story isn't too long, you quickly learn about Ceony as she fights what she initially views as a burden and later understands can be as powerful as anything. Though she hasn't spent much time with Emery, traveling through his heart shows her (and us!) the man he currently is as well as the person he once was. This story is sweet but also shows that you shouldn't underestimate anyone or anything.
