Review: Robopocalypse

Robopocalypse - Daniel H. Wilson

In man's quest to create a greater computer that can be controlled, a sentient A.I. frees itself and plans in the darkness to take over the world. Slowly building its army and making its plans, the world is taken by surprise when the electric and robotic components of their lives try to kill them.

Yes, the whole "robots take over the world" scenario has been done before. Who hasn't seen Terminator? And, of course, The Matrix... though only the first, since I refuse to acknowledge that the sequels exist. In all of those stories, humans somehow fight back and save the day.

But what if you're in a world where almost everything has a robotic or chipped component? One day, your cars start trying to run you over. The elevators in your building eat residents and spit their corpses back up. Military-grade drones, robots, and even mines find their way into the middle of a busy area and blow themselves up. And that plane in the sky crashes down, killing everyone inside as well as the people in the neighborhood it landed in.

Welcome to Zero Hour and the start of the New War.

Robopocalypse is the story of the humans who survived the New War, as well as many who didn't. They all play a major part in the story of how humanity managed to live, both leading up to the War and after. And humanity is not alone... though I'll leave that spoiler in the book where it belongs. Well-written with an excellently conceived plot, characters you want to like, and enough surprises to make the book something other than every other "Evil Robot" story out there, I highly recommend this futuristic but still relatable narrative.
