Review: We Are All Completely Fine
Group Therapy sessions are often seen in Television Shows and Movies as a way for the main character to reach a breakthrough or to explain more about the circumstances that a character finds themselves in. In real life, Group Therapy sessions usually end up with one or two people who talk about themselves almost nonstop, a few others who sit there in silence, sharing nothing, and at least one person who quips constantly in a defensive nature... and no one really wants to be there.
We Are All Completely Fine seems to start out with your typical therapy session, with all of the prerequisite characters. Their problems, however, are not your typical problems: Every one of them was the victim of some sort of supernatural creature. Left now in a world where almost no one will believe their experiences - and can you really trust anyone who would believe? - they are gathered together into a weekly group therapy session by a doctor as interesting as her patients.
Without giving away anything about the story, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the way the novel was written. The characters were well fleshed-out, enough detail was given out - over the course of the sessions - to explain why they are there, and it was a good and fun ending that completes the initial storyline but also leaves an opening for a possible sequel. The point of view switches from person to person while still making it understandable who is "talking" at that time, and it's great to see the story from different perspectives. While I had guessed the twist at the end, it still works well and it isn't obvious, making it a nice surprise for many readers.
Magic exists. Horrors beyond reason torment those who survive. And perhaps therapy is the only way that some people may find their way through the tangled web of their past.
