Review: Some Fine Day

Some Fine Day - Kat Ross

Set in a future where hypercanes have destroyed the surface of the earth and the people have been driven below, Some Fine Day is a good example of a post-apocalyptic book done right.

Jansin, a sixteen year old military cadet, is excited to find that she and her family will be spending a vacation swimming in the ocean and basking in the sun. Growing up 6000 miles below the earth's surface, she has never seen the sun or walked in the sand. When the vacation goes sour and she is kidnapped by insurgents actually living above, Jansin finds that any of the stories told of the Transition are false - those in the prefectures below are not the only survivors.

This novel is an exciting blend of action and character development, along with the history of the collapse of civilization. Taking place both buried deep in the early and upon the ocean, I loved watching Jansin come to terms with her new world and learn to love it. Without giving away spoilers, the conflict is well written and multi-dimensional. Jansin's enemies become her friends, her prior life becomes her enemy, and then there are the toads - a new species brought about by experimentation and evolution. And just when you think that you've learned all that you need to know, the author throws in another layer of complexity!

No book is perfect, but this one comes close for me. It's been a while since I read a book that I absolutely did not want to put down. I found myself reading Some Fine Day late into the night - who needs sleep? - and impatiently waited until I was done with work so I could pick it back up to finish the story. While post-apocalyptic stories and movies feature storms have been done in the past, this novel manages to bring a unique twist to this fun adventure. I can only hope that there will be a sequel!

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
