Review: City of Stairs
I picked up City of Stairs because the book seemed, from the description, to be wildly interesting and something that I would be sure to love. Political Intrigue, check. Gods, check. A conquered nation, check. Magic (or divine powers), check!
Unfortunately, this book didn't grab my attention once I started reading it. Perhaps because there is so much world-building that the author has to do, the plot gets lost in the overwhelming details. I enjoyed the characters of Shara and Sigrud immensely, and I enjoyed learning about them over the course of the book. But instead of feeling like a fantasy, this book comes across as more of a murder-mystery that happens to have some fantastical elements involved.
I can appreciate the author's writing style and the time taken the write the book and expand upon this world, unfortunately it just fell flat for me. I will try coming back to this book next year to see if some space leaves me with more interest, but unfortunately the book was too slow and I ended up being too bored to finish.
Thanks to the Blogging for Books program for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
