Review: The Awakened Kingdom

The Awakened Kingdom (Inheritance) - N.K. Jemisin

Three hundred years after The Kingdom of Gods, a newborn godling finds her way to Darr. The newest child of The Three, Shill has yet to find her purpose and nature. But what can you expect from a god only forty days old?

The answer is: everything unimaginable.

This story grew on me. At first, the infantile storytelling and language made me want to stop reading, but the tone of the book was so different than the trilogy that I was curious to see what direction the author took. As Shill grew, so did her vocabulary, and the tale grew more complex as well. While I did not enjoy it as much as the full novels set in this universe, it was interesting. I give it 3 1/2 stars it had some fun parts, but it just didn't feel like it fit the rest of the series.

The Awakened Kingdom is a short story that takes place after The Inheritance Trilogy, and can be read in The Inheritance Trilogy omnibus. I received the omnibus edition from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
