Review: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - Seth Grahame-Smith

My stepbrother & sister-in-law picked up Abraham Hunter: Vampire Hunter for me a few years back, and somehow I never got around to reading it. The author has recently released a sequel, however, so I decided that I should probably read the first book before reading the second!

Growing up poor, with little to no formal education and a father who seemingly cares for nothing more than the needs of the moment, Abe surpasses those obstacles and eventually becomes the President of the United States. This book is steeped in the actual history of Abraham Lincoln himself, showing us who the actual man is and where he came from, and the friends he met along the way. A minor change was... inserted... however, and intertwined in the truth of Honest Abe is a tale of a boy with a desire to kill the vampires he blames for his mother's death.

I was pleasantly surprised by the integration of Lincoln's life with the vampire mythos. From challenging stereotypes - sunlight and garlic will NOT keep a vampire from you or kill one - to providing factual historical descriptions of the locations and people, this book is a great mixture of a history lesson with a few fangs added in. The difficult thing will be in remembering what really is true, and that no matter how evil politicians are, they aren't actually controlled by vampires bent on world domination.
