Review: Bridges Burned
Bridges Burned is the second novel in Chris Cannon's "Going Down in Flames" series, and it continues the story of Bryn McKenna at the Institute for Excellence. Though being acknowledged by her mother's parents gives Bryn a level of protection she lacked, she still isn't accepted by all students, especially those in the Blue Clan. Moved to the Black dorm after she was poisoned, this would be the perfect opportunity for Bryn and Zavien to become closer. Unfortunately, Zavien seems to want to keep Bryn as his secret girlfriend while he sends increasing amounts of time with his intended. With Zavien's intentions proving false, Bryn luckily has a shoulder to cry on and someone to make her smile... Her knight, Valmont.
Danger surfaces and threatens all when the school comes under attack, first by Orange breath weapons. Surviving sonic waves, wind storms, giant hail, and fire, Bryn learns the value of true friends and finds a way to prove her own worth. Maybe this isn't where she expected to be, but it's quickly becoming home.
Bridges Burned is a good book and I'm very happy with the twists the author integrated with the story. The relationships between the characters aren't perfect, and feel more real because of this. While the ending isn't as strong and leaves loose strings, I'm hopeful that the author will continue this series and bring everything to a satisfying conclusion. Bryn is keeping her independence but is slowly realizing that sometimes compromise and other social niceties are required, and I'm glad to see the growth in her character while still keeping a fiery spirit. Valmont is quickly becoming a favorite character, and it was great to learn more about him, Jaxon, and Rhianna.
While I don't feel that Bridges Burned is as strong as the first book, it is still a great addition to the series and a wonderful adventure.
