Review: Then Again

Then Again (Realms Of Our Own) - Michael Carney

Then Again, a short story in the "Realms of Our Own" collection, takes us to a New Year's Eve celebration. Jesse, an Outcast Angel, and a troupe of human trainees, have a mission: protect the Russian presidential candidate from assassination.

Without getting into too many details and potentially giving away the surprises in this short story, I want to say that it is well written, interesting, and the characters are fun. The story jumps time, starting in the present and then jumping to the past and to different locations to explain how the events came to be on this last night of the year. The author gives you the time and location on each chapter so it is easy to know "when" in the storyline you are, so there is no confusion. Seeing the "end" play out while learning more about the world through these flashbacks creates an interesting method of telling the story, allowing you to learn who these characters are without feeling that a ton of information was randomly thrown at you.

Filled with magic, angels, demons, and assassins, the author manages to provide enough life and excitement in this short story to interest me in reading more.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
