Review: Wide-Open World
Imagine packing up minimal belongings and traveling around the world, volunteering at different locations. That is what John Marshall and his family did, leaving their normal lives and technology behind to experience the world through a volunteer's eyes. Starting first at a wildlife sanctuary in Costa Rica where spider monkeys sit on your head, traveling next to New Zealand to work at organic farms, spending time in an Indian orphanage, and even hobnobbing with monks at the Siddhartha School in Ladakh, this book showcases the experiences that John, Traca, Logan, and Jackson live though as well as their personal growth during their six months of service.
I really enjoyed reading Wide-Open World. Not only are the first person experiences enjoyable, but seeing the changes in the family from the beginning of their adventure through to the end, and their lives after, fascinated me. The author does a really good job.of sharing the pluses and minuses of traveling as a volunteer and visiting counties and places outside of the standard vacation spots.
This is both a travel diary and a journey of self-discovery, giving me the motivation to reach beyond what is expected.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
