Review: Suckers
Suckers is not your standard vampire book. While it has some of the trademarks of your traditional vampire novel such as bats and drinking blood, it steps outside of the norm. Bitten by a bat - or at least a bat-like creature with wings - Dan soon finds himself with a headache and auditory hallucinations. After days of hearing "bees" in his head, Dan goes back to normal... But only after attacking a hospital tech. A week later, Dan is on edge again and manages to attack his friend Ray, confirming that the taste of blood is what temporarily satisfies the beast inside. As Dan seeks to harmlessly control whatever is driving him toward violence and a thirst for blood, the rest of the country is not so lucky. With attacks on the street, in school, and at home, the young and old alike find themselves as the victims of "suckers."
Suckers started out slow, with a lot of time spent on Dan's day-to-day life as a touring musician and his initial symptoms after being bitten. Thankfully, approximately a third of the day through the book brings more excitement as the parasites spread and the world becomes aware of the epidemic. I enjoyed the progression of the story and the way that the author explored different potential cures and their results. The ending isn't happy, but in a story where the world is ending with no escape you can't really expect a "Happily Ever After"... This is a horror story that leaves us with unanswered questions, leaving us to wonder if the nightmare is over.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
