Review: The One
I had to give myself time to think before writing this review. Initially, I was still grumpy because of the disappointment I had reading book two, and my gut reaction was to knock this book down a star because I wasn’t as excited about it as I should have been.
However, after giving myself a night to sleep on it, I realized that this third book is better than my initial reaction, because it did revive my interest in the series and made me excited about the characters again. A book coming after a disappointment needs to be even more special to combat those feelings, and this book manages it.
The third book of The Selection Series, The One, is the culmination of Maxon and America’s love story and the best book in this series. Not only are we thrown more into the current politics and the history of the kingdom, but we also really get to know the Selected girls for the first time. We also learn more about America herself, her family, her maids, Maxon and his family… essentially everything is shoved into one final book, a nonstop adventure that takes us to a happy ending.
While the first and second books were short on world-building, the third really makes up for it. The romance is also still there, but America’s wishy-washy behavior from the second book is almost entirely missing. Where the first book introduces us to the main characters and the plot, sweeping us into a love story, the third ties everything together and leaves you with a greater understanding of the convoluted politics and social structure, bringing us back into the love story with more developed characters and a greater understanding of their motives and desires.
My reviews for this series:
The Selection – Book 1 – 4 ½ stars
The Elite – Book 2 – 2 stars
The One – Book 3 – 5 stars
