Review: Material Girls

Material Girls - Elaine Dimopoulos

Material Girls takes us into a new dystopian world, where 13 year olds are Tapped to because the leading force in the country's creative arts, from fashion to movies, music to video games. With the main focus being split between one of the stars on the music scene and a dissatisfied ex-judge in the fashion industry, we're able to see how life both from the top... and the bottom. But yet, even as Marla is demoted to being a drafter instead of one of the teenages making decisions regarding current Trends, she is still better off than an "Adequate" - a person who was never Tapped for a creative industry.

In this word, the celebrities and those involved in the other creative arts are those who make the most and are considered the best, but like the Trends they wear, there is an expiration date... become too old, and you'll be replaced with a fresh new Tap.

I enjoyed this book. Seeing how consumerism could - and does in this book - push away all other ambition was interesting. In this world, the creative forces have command, and the Adequates are stuck with the "lower" and unwanted professions, such as being a Doctor, a Lawyer... or even the President.
