Review: A Twist of Date

A Twist of Date - Susan Hatler

A Twist of Date is the fifth book in the "Better Date than Never" series by Susan Hatler, and keeps the fun and romance alive. These books are set up as standalone stories, but many of the characters make an appearance as secondary characters so it's fun to read them all to piece the stories together.

While the first four stories in the book deal primarily with people who work in a specific company, or are long-time friends of those people, Mel sneaks in through the fact that a few of her customers are characters from the previous books. There isn't as much of a connection to the main cast of characters, but this instead feels more like an introduction to Mel and Kaitlin, who were bit players in previous books and are coming into their own now.

A Twist of Date introduces us to Melanie "Mel" Porter, a woman in love with the idea of love, who is seeking The One. No, not Neo from The Matrix, she's looking for the one person to be with forever. A child of a broken marriage, she is scared to repeat her mother's history, and so becomes a serial dater to hopefully find the person who will be with her forever. To complicate issues, Mel discovers that she may have a closer relationship than she would have liked with her stepsister Kaitlin's new fiance.

I found this story amusing and really liked Mel's coworkers... in fact, I liked some of her coworkers better than I liked Mel, who got lost a little in the story of the gym she works at. The author really doesn't give us enough time to get to know who Melanie is, and while I cheered for the ending, I wish we were able to spend more time getting to know the main character just a little bit better.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
