Review: Inside Out

Inside Out - Maria V. Snyder

Book 2 for #PaperbackSummer is Inside Out by Maria V. Snyder. I was first introduced to this author through her Study series, which I will be re-reading this summer, but Inside Out is a completely different book set in a completely different universe.

Set at an unknown time when 100 hours equals a week and 100 weeks equals a  really long "year", we meet Trella, a scrub from the lower levels. Nicknamed the Queen of the Pipes, Trella yearns for silence away from the overcrowding on levels one and two. When a new prophet convinces Trella to retrieve discs from a hidden location in the upper levels, Trella soon finds herself in the middle of a revolution.

I really enjoyed this book. Without it actually being said, the author manages to give the impression that this is set in the future by little comments interspersed throughout the story. This could, in fact, be our future someday. The characters we meet throughout the story are real, with their own personalities and motives, and we are able to learn about them over the course of the tale. Maria V. Snyder has always been wonderful about creating characters you grow to like - or sometimes hate - and this book doesn't disappoint.

This is the first book in a two book series, and I'm excited to read the second!
