Review: Outside In
Book 3 of #PaperbackSummer is Outside In, by Maria V. Snyder. This is the immediate sequel to Inside Out, where we first met Trella, the Force of Sheep, and the scrubs and uppers of Inside. Now that Trella and the Force of Sheep have taken over and put the Trava family in the brig, they find that there is still a lot more work to do. For years, the uppers have had the more technical jobs while the scrubs did the grunt work... with no one really taking control, the ship is quickly falling apart, with laundry stacking up and trash in piles.
In the middle of all of this, the Committee (formed after the rebellion) loses control of this ship, and it's up to Trella to find out if the damage is coming from disturbances Inside... or from the Outside.
Outside In is full of twists and turns, with the author switching up the plot every time you think you know what is happening. It is very well written, and the surprises keep you from guessing what the ending will be, and even the entirely of what is happening along the way. While Trella seems to lose her way for a little bit in the beginning, she is soon back to being the kick-ass reluctant heroine we first met. Minor characters from the first book suddenly become much more important, and I'm happy to report that we get to spend more time with Logan and Anne-Jade.
Where this book falters a little bit is in the beginning, as the author spends the first third of the story setting the scene for the later action. This means, however, that the action rarely stops once it finally starts.
