Review: Training the Alpha - Part One

Training the Alpha is the first part in a four part serial about werewolves in Texas. Part one introduces us to Thomas, a man who was bitten and changed into a werewolf at a young age by Ceres, the daughter of the local Alpha. Set some time after he was changed, Thomas and Ceres now live together in a small town, Atropos, while Ceres finishes her schooling as a veterinarian and Thomas deals with unrequited lust for her. When Thomas' darker side rises, their relationship, as well as their future in the pack, changes.
I enjoyed this book, and felt like the characters are given enough personality in this first book that we can see some development and growth. I don't like Ceres, however, so it will be interesting to see how she changes - if she does at all - in future parts.
The naming in this book is unusual. The story is set in Atropos - a town created by the author - which happens to be the name of one of the Greek Fates, specifically the Fate who cuts the threads. Given the events of the book, this town seems to be appropriately named.
Ceres is another unique name, this time a Roman Goddess, the Goddess of grain, agriculture, and fertility. For those more familiar with Greek Mythology, Demeter would be the Greek counterpart of Ceres. It will be interesting to see if the author manages to somehow tie this name into the character's personality somehow, or if it was just chosen as a unique name.
Overall, this is a good beginning to what is promising to be an interesting story.
Warning: This book contains explicit sex and adult language
