Review: Restore
This short story is not a happy story, but it shows a human side of the ascenders in this dark corner of Susan Kaye Quinn's Singularity universe. Unit 7435 is a med bot, brought out of the hospital to care for a legacy human, and this story is told from its point of view. As an artificial intelligence, created to serve ascenders - and legacy humans at the bidding of the ascenders - its knowledge and intelligence is limited to what the ascenders want it to know and do. When Unit 7435 experiences something outside of its training and has to decide how to cope, the end result was not what I expected, and it made me think about what makes something sentient, and what "humanity" really is.
While this is a short story in the Singularity series, it can be read on its own as a great example of artificial intelligence in a controlled society. You willing probably understand and appreciate it more, however, if you first read The Legacy Human.
I received this story, free, in exchange for an honest review.
