Review: In Search of the Paranormal
For twenty years, Richard Estep has been investigating things that go bump in the night. Starting as a young man in England and continuing after moving to the United States, ghost stories enthralled him, causing him to hunt out the tales and places that most people avoid. Working with different ghost hunting/paranormal investigation teams, the author shares some of his experiences in this book.
One of the things that I liked the most is that not all stories end with evidence of the supernatural. All stories aside, sometimes a creak on the steps is just the house settling, and not a creature walking down in the dark of the night. After researching and spending overnight in a "haunted" location, sometimes nothing happens. Does that mean that the place isn't haunted? Not necessarily, but it was nice to see that the author shows the proof - or lack thereof - in the investigations.
Another nice thing is that the author works with different teams and is open to different investigative styles. Normally when you think of ghost hunters, you think of an established organization like T.A.P.S., but there are many other groups out there. Some of the investigations that Richard participated in involved people from several different paranormal research groups, even one where he flew to England to join an overnight stay at an old prison in London.
While most of the stories are interesting, I found that I liked the history behind the ones in England the most... mainly because there is more history there, spanning hundreds of years. In contrast, most of the haunted locations mentioned in the United States have only gained the reputation of the supernatural within the past one hundred years or so, some only within recent decades.
Overall, this was an enjoyable collection of tales with little repetition and enough details to make the stories come alive. Fans of the supernatural and/or ghost hunting should give this book a chance, since you'll probably enjoy it!
