Review: Once Upon a More Enlightened Time

Once Upon a More Enlightened Time: More Politically Correct Bedtime Stories - James Finn Garner

Once Upon a More Enlightened Time is the second book in the Politically Correct Bedtime Stories series. While I was not impressed with the first book, feeling that the stories were too similar and lacking in charm, I found this second book much, much better. There is a wider variety of stories, pulling from both fairy tales and fables.

Ignoring the first story, which is really just a politically correct nursery rhyme, I enjoyed the rest of the tales. "Puss in Boots" is my favorite of the book, combining the traditional tale with twentieth-century politics. "The Tortoise and the Hare" also made me laugh, as did "The Ant and the Grasshopper," both bringing Aesop's Fables into the modern world.

My recommendation is to skip the first volume and go straight to this one! I'm not sure I would read it again, but it was a quick and run read.
