Review: Mage-Guard of Hamor (The Saga of Recluce, #15)
A fascinating look into the life of a Mage in Hamor
The sequel to "Natural Ordermage", this novel continues the story of Rahl and his mentor Taryl. Hamor has been dragged into a war of brother against brother, Imperial against Rebel. The second novel set in Hamor shows Rahl exploring more of his power and learning who he is as a person and to what lengths he will go to protect the people who have become his friends, family, and responsibility.
I enjoyed this novel more than "Natural Ordermage", feeling that the first book of this duology set the story in motion for this novel. The stories fit together seamlessly, and also provide more information on Hamor's point of view regarding past conflicts with Recluse, as well as connections between the ancient civilization of Cyad - mentioned both by the usurper when he attempted to claim the throne of Emperor during battle, and also with a token or esteem and affection that links back to characters in "Scion of Cyador."
I really enjoy the way that Modesitt continues to link the novels in his Recluse saga to each other, even across different time periods and countries. It shows that the actions of a few can and sometimes do affect generations of people.... a history lesson that everyone should learn.
