Review: The Light Keepers, a FREE Epic Fantasy Adventure (ShadowLight Saga) [Kindle Edition]

The Light Keepers - Mande Matthews

Short Stories are supposed to get you interested in the story so that you'll read the full books if there are any... this story doesn't:

The Light Keepers is a prequel of the ShadowLight series. Unfortunately, the story failed at gaining my interest or making me want to read more. The reason why is because the character development is very shallow and you finish the short story not knowing much more about the characters than you did when you started reading.

Half of this story is also taken up with an 8 chapter preview of the first novel in the ShadowLight Saga, "Bonded". This preview had the same fault of the short story itself.... I read about the characters actions, I learned their names, but I didn't learn their motives behind WHY anything was done and I didn't learn much about how the characters think or what their personalities are.

I gave this review a 3 star because it's an interesting premise that is introduced in the short story (which is what is actually being reviewed) but since the characters don't build enough personality or plot line for me to be interested in continuing to read, I am unable to give it a 4 or 5 star review. My advice to the author would be to either expand the short story to explain more of the plot and/or backstory, or to include the stort story as the first chapter or two of Bonded - it's too short and lacks "oomph" to be a story on it's own.
