SPOILER ALERT!

Out Of Darkness: Book One (The Starborn Uprising 1) [Kindle Edition]

Out of Darkness - Jason D. Morrow

Out of Darkness is the first book in the Starborn Uprising series, by Jason D. Morrow.  Set 60 years after a virus mutated some human into "greyskins", you are first introduced to Mora, a nineteen year old girl from the village of Springhill.  Springhill is often under attack by the greyskins, who will turn you into one of them if you are scratched or bitten. Their only hope seems to be to go to Jeremiah of Screven for protection. For 80% of your food/production, Screven will protect your village from attacking mobs of greyskins.

While this is in fact a "zombie" book, in that the greyskins turn you into one by getting their saliva into you, it doesn't read like a zombie book.  It's a survival book.  The people in this story are trying to stay alive, and also trying to free themselves from a regime they feel has too much power.

This is a book about people who find that, under stress, powers may manifest to save them or kill the threat around them.  It's a battle of civilizations: a town that has been under the hands of a protective regime for longer than necessary or originally contracted for, a small group of people who will do anything to be free and protect others, and small towns struggling to survive who can't receive protection from Screven because they are too small and wouldn't offer enough to him to make it worthwhile to protect them.  It is clear from the start that Jeremiah is in it for the power and prestige, while most people are only trying to survive.

This is the first book in a trilogy.  After completing this book, I will certainly read the other two since I find the concept of how the civilizations have grown and become dependent on one person to be fascinating.
