Review: Spicy Alphabet Soup - Flash Fiction [Kindle Edition]
The short stories in Elizabeth Ticknor's "Spicy Alphabet Soup" are a glimpse into the life of everyday ordinary people... well, maybe not ordinary. In these quick glimpses, it seems that everyone is either in a dysfunctional relationship, trying to escape an abusive relationship, or wanting to be in a relationship. The few stories that AREN'T about relationships instead are about pets, which I guess means that they're still about relationships: They're just about a person's relationship with a pet.
The theme that I would take from this collection is that everyone is reliant on someone. Pets are reliant on people taking care of them. People are reliant on their parents raising them correctly, and then Parents are reliant upon their children once they grow older. People in a committed relationship need to reply on each other, and friends need to rely on each other as well. When you don't have someone to rely on, everything seems to fall apart.
Maybe this is too much to read into a book of shorts, except that the author nicely brings the story around in a full circle and the last story ends with a resolution to the first. This is a very well written book of short stories with an interconnected theme of love and trust, and why you need to trust in order to love.
