Review: The Leftovers
Maybe it was the Rapture. Maybe it was a mass alien harvesting of our planet. Maybe it was something else all together. But the only thing that the people of Mapleton knew is that millions of people vanished within seconds across the world.
In the wake of the mass disappearance, religious cults sprout like new spring weeds, and about as welcome. The Guilty Remnant, who take a vow of silence and wear all white. The Holy Wayners, those who followed Holy Wayne, a healing profit with six spiritual teenage wives. The Barefoot People, who walk barefoot and believe the purity comes from within, so missing a few showers won't hurt.
And through this all threads the story of a family: Laurie, Kevin, Tom, Jill. While their family stayed intact through the disappearance, they are all affected in different ways by the disappearances of those around them. This book tells their stories, intertwined with the stories of the families who have lost others, as well as the new religious orders.

Even with the endings being unsettled, this is a good book. It takes one family and shows how their grieving can touch the lives of others and that the decisions they make impact their town and beyond.
You can purchase the hardcover copy of this book, currently at a bargain price of $10.40 at http://www.amazon.com/dp/0312358342/?tag=shasworofboo-20.
The kindle version can be purchased for $7.99 at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004TLH3L0/?tag=shasworofboo-20
The paperback is actually more expensive than either of these options, currently priced for $12.96 (I'm assuming trade paperback instead of mass market) so I'm not bothering to link that one.
