Review: Deadman's Lament [Kindle Edition]
You have a young man named Matthew. His father dies of natural causes. His mother of illness. His sister is taken away and he is alone.
You have the same Matthew, who has found a place in a Fur Trader's outpost, with a family that treats him as their own, and a girl who he loves.
And then everything is taken away from him again. The outpost raided. Marie's parents murdered. And Marie and Matthew stolen away for purposes unknown, first by the bandits, and then Marie is taken by the Indians while Matthew is left alone. Again.
----------
You have an Indian named Redbird. He had come into a town to trade, and leaves only to find his brother raped and murdered. Redbird swears revenge on this bandit, called Top Hat. While chasing Top Hat, he finds the bandits camp without Top Hat, instead taking a young woman there, leaving behind a young man he has nicknamed Slingshot.
----------
You have two lives in Parallel. Matthew and Redbird. Both love Marie. Both have lost their family. Both are driven by a force to revenge their families and loved ones.
Obsession.
----------
I have never before read a book that made me so sad, even during the happy parts. This was a well written book - not just a well written western, but I could see this story working well in any genre. The characters are real and you want to help them, to be there for them.
I see the obsession run Matthews life for him to the point that he can't see beyond his revenge. He feels that he must be the one to kill Top Hat. But obsession comes at a price. When you are obsessed with an idea, you close your mind off to the other possibilities. Who can you trust, and who has been bought by the Mad Hatters? When you're obsessed, you don't care... you can't think. Obsession leads to death... those around you and perhaps yourself. But you are willing to let this obsession rule you because you haven't known anything else for 13 years. Every goal you have achieved, every fighting skill, even law... everything is for this one obsession.
The question is... can Matthew escape the obsession before it is too late? Can Redbird? Can there be peace during the wars between Natives and Whites when you share a common enemy?
Can you move past the obsession?
