Review: Scouting for the Reaper

Scouting for the Reaper - Jacob M. Appel

Scouting for the Reaper is a collection of eight short stories  Stories that really stood out for me are "Choose Your Own Genetics" where a young student learns that her life may not be what she originally thought it was. "Rods and Cones" also interested me because it shows that love and family and health are all linked together. "The Vermin Episode" shows the dark side of people, where they will commiserate with you up only until the point where you ask them to accept something strange and/or different. This story also shows the good in people, where a man risks his beliefs and his wife in order to do what he thought was right when no one else would.

The rest of the stories were good, but aren't ones that I would necessarily read over again. The one exception is "Creve Coeur", a story that shows that sometimes a memory is better than reality, and that you can't go back to the way that things were no matter how much you want to. I have mixed feelings about this story, but I feel that it was needed to move the theme from the first story onwards. Overall, this book was interesting and the stories are well written. The author manages to tie stories that are completely different together with the shared theme of life, living, and or death.
