Review: The Cleansing (Earth Haven) [Kindle Edition]

The Cleansing (Earth Haven) - Sam Kates

The Cleansing, Book One in the "Earth Haven" series, is an interesting mix of aliens, conspiracy, and a planned apocalypse. Knowing the the apocalypse is planned isn't a spoiler, because the planned mass-murder of humans is shown in the first two chapters. No Mercy is one of the instructions that these murderers have, and they go about their crimes in a very casual matter.

So while the "how" of the apocalypse is not a spoiler, they "why" is. Why are these people killing others? Why do they have no fear for themselves... is there an antidote or are they immune? And why now? All we know is that "they" are coming... but who are they?

I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next in the series. Sam Kates writes very likeable characters and sometimes you aren't sure who is evil and who isn't. Evil is a very harsh word as well... after finishing the book, I'm not sure that the people who started this whole mess are really evil, or if they're just selfish. This isn't your stereotypical end of the world story, and it introduces some concepts that would change how we view the creation of our own society.
