Review: It's No Picnic [Kindle Edition]

It's No Picnic - Kenneth E. Myers

Alex was a detective until his home life fell apart and he decided to join the village of Longport, where he is given an overly large and unique key to his new house. In this strange and convoluted tale, Alex is brought back into the life of a detective when Miss K. asks him to find her missing sister, Nadie. But nothing in this community is quite what it seems... The days pass quicker than normal, the church that no one attends is almost always wreathed in fog, and the attendant can't remember Alex each time they meet. What would seem like a simple life in a retirement community is anything but, as an unseen "Lord" seems to direct, or narrate, each conversation and event that Alex sees around him. At the turn of a key, Alex's life changed the minute he started his new life in Longport.

This is a very interesting short story, and the storyline warps what you believe about each and every person you meet to the point where you can't know what the ending will be. And even after reading the story, it's impossible to know what is real and what isn't.

As this book is only 73 pages (according to Amazon's page count) I'm not 100% sure if it's worth the $3.99 that it's currently listed at... I would probably price it at dollar lower for the amount of pages, since for some reason $2.999 seems better for anything under 100 pages.  But that's just my opinion! If you like strange books and you will have to read at least twice to figure out exactly what in the heck just happened, I say go for it. At least you know that you'll get two reads out of it, which isn't bad for $3.99! Honestly though, the first time I read it, I got to the ending and just blinked. I didn't know how to feel about the book. So I read it again, and knowing what I had discovered previously, there was a lot more depth to the book than you would normally find in 73 pages. I was pleasantly surprised and will most likely pick up other books by Kenneth E. Myers.
