Review: Flawed (Perfection) [Kindle Edition]

Flawed - J.L. Spelbring

Flawed, the second book in the Perfection series, was a much better and more complete novel than the first one. To me, while the first novel did not live up to the name "Perfection" - I'm happy to say that the second book did not live up to it's name either... while it's not perfect, it's not flawed. Instead, it's a great sequel that answers a lot of the questions that I had after reading the first novel.

The characters are, however, flawed... but written in a way that you know that the flaws are on purpose and it makes them seem more real. Ellyssa, the main character from the first book, is back and she has greatly developed as a character and as a person. After destroying her father and siblings in the first book, Ellyssa, Rein, and Woody find their way back home to the caves to find that the Renegades were massacred. Almost 2/3 of their friends and family are now dead, and the rest are missing.  It becomes their goal to find the rest of their "family" and rescue them.

Ellyssa, however, does not know that this battle will also be against two surviving siblings. Aalexis and Xaver, who should have died, were kept alive by Xaver's shield and are now on their own course of revenge to find Ellyssa. They also intend to keep "der Vater's" work going, to create the superior soldier. However, Aalexis and Xaver do not recognize their own flaws, as they are now experiencing emotions without the control or the ability to recognize them.

My main objections to the first book, Perfection, are answered in this book. While I didn't enjoy the first book by itself, the two books together make a complete novel. My only complaint would be the "sex scenes" in the book - Yes, I understand that this is a YA book, but the sex scenes in the book were written as if the author just chopped out the actual act of sex but left the beginning and the end in the book - making the scenes feel really disjointed. I would prefer the scenes to be left out together or else to have the scene start and then fade out, leaving the reader to imagine what might or might not have happened.  But writing the "before" and "after" just didn't work.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series - Ellyssa has come out of her emotional shell for the most part and is fitting in with her new family and is experiencing loss in the way that only a normal human does. I'm interested to see how she handles herself in the next novel... and also interested to see the emotional growth of Aalexis and Xaver and how that changes their goals.
