Review: Tinker [Kindle Edition]
This is the story of Tinker, an 18 year old girl genius, and her cousin Oilcan. This is also the story of Pittsburgh, the city that was transported to Elfhome 20+ years ago when the hyperphase gate was turning on. Every 30 days, Pittsburgh is transported back to Earth for one day only when the Chinese government powers down the gate. This allows the humans who still live in Pittsburgh to collect much needed supplies to supplement the local food on Elfhome.
Tinker and Oilcan, both raised in Pittsburgh/Elfhome, successfully run a scrapyard while also concealing the fact that Tinker's father was the man who first discovered how to create a gate. This knowledge ends up being brought to light, however, after Oni attempt to kidnap Tinker and kill Windwolf, the viceroy of the Westernlands. Tinker soon finds herself having to make a choice between old friends and new love, between magic and her work, and between honor and betrayal.
I first read Tinker years ago. I loved the history behind all of the different characters, and how you learn throughout the telling of the story that not everything is as it seems, or even as the world believes. Friends become enemies, truth becomes fiction, and the only constant is a love so new that Tinker isn't quite sure that it is real.
