Review: Wood Sprites (Tinker Book 4) [Kindle Edition]

Wood Sprites (Elfhome) - Wen Spencer

Wood Sprites is Wen Spencer's fourth book in the Tinker series, and yet it is the first book that doesn't actually feature Tinker. Instead, this is a book written from the point of view of two nine year old twin sisters, Louise and Jillian. The novel starts a few months before the first Tinker book, but is told from Earth instead of Pittsburgh or Elfhome.

Louise and Jillian aren't your normal nine year old children. Born from the leftover embryos that weren't needed for Tinker's birth, the girls not only strongly resemble Tinker but also have her genius. Raised by parents who are rich with love but poor with money, the girls find out that they are not the biological children of their parents after an accident takes them to the hospital. Investigating their own origins, they find that they are the genetic children of Leonardo DaVinci Dufae and Esme Shenske. And just like Tinker, they carry destruction in their genes, as you first see when they blow up their playhouse!

From the beginning of the book through to the end, this is full of nonstop excitement as well as twists and turns in the story. While we know what is going on in Pittsburgh, seeing the story play out from the other side of the Veil is interesting and amazing. This is a book that fills in the gaps, explains more about the players in the game of War, and gives Pittsburgh a more human side as you see what the rest of the world thinks about the Elves. There are new characters introduced that had been mentioned in previous books including Esme's family, where you find out exactly why they are so frightening. You also learn more about dragons, tengu, and Unbounded Brilliance himself... and what he stole from his uncle. There is even an appearance from Heaven's Blessing himself, one of the Skin Clan and the elf known as The Soulness One.

This book was a great addition to the Tinker series, and a glimpse into what Tinker must have been like as a nine year old. And the best thing of all is that the story leaves rooms for additional books, and we know that Tinker and Windwolf's life is just going to get more exciting and confused with the addition of Tinker's new sisters.
