Review: Detour to Dusk
As we get closer to Halloween, I find myself reading more and more books focused on the darker nightmares. With fang and wing, Detour to Dusk give us the history of a different breed of Vampire, one born before homo sapiens and still alive today. Beautiful of face and flight, the vampires soon find themselves outnumbered as the humans multiply while the vampires become barren. In a quest to keep their race alive, the vampires learn to live in peace with those they once hunted.
Peace is never perfect, however. Exiled and insane, a small group of vampires find their way back to Human lands and take their revenge on those they see as inferior.
Enter Holly and Brian, a young married couple taking their early camping trip. As the danger grows around them, a park ranger named Roger and Harley, a Native American Spirit Walker, are drawn in to fight a war they never knew existed.
Linell Jeppsen is able to take a race of beings traditionally thought of as evil and instead shows us that they are not that much different from humans. Intertwining the story of Holly & Brian with the long struggles and past of the vampires gives us a unique perspective and allows the reader to empathize with the majority of the characters... even those we might have initially labelled as "The Bad Guys."
NOTE: I received a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
